1st Company — The Exemplars

The Best of the Best

  • Veterans who have mastered both Knight and Ranger doctrines.

  • Terminator armour is commonly bone-white reflecting Dark Angel’s heritage.

  • Often present at treaty signings, duels, and oaths of fealty on frontier worlds.

  • Rarely seen as a full company, with brothers dispersed to other companies depending on specialism or need.

The 1st Company is the apex of most Chapter’s fighting forces. Often referred to as the Veteran Company, they represent the transition from elite trans-human soldier to living legend.

Every member of a 1st Company has served for decades or even centuries. To be inducted into the Warden’s 1st Company, Brothers must display peerless combat skill and unshakable mental fortitude. Those of the 1st are the Warden’s elite reserve, rarely deployed as a single company but instead attached to other strike forces to act as the "tip of the spear." These squads will have trained and fought together for decades with a Brother remaining within their squad until promotion to another Company’s leadership or the Emperor’s Peace takes them.

Unlike more Codex complaint chapters, Brothers can be promoted to the 1st through various routes rather than having progressed through from 10th to 2nd companies. For Knights, they will have progressed through the 5th, 4th and 3rd Companies. Their best marksmen may then be promoted to Sternguard or Terminator Squads. Some will have seen lengthy service in the 2nd before becoming Vanguard or Bladeguard veterans.

For Rangers, their service in the 9th, 8th and 7th will have secured their legends as peerless marksmen, earning roles in the Sternguard. Those who have proved themselves in ship boardings with the 6th will find a place in Terminator or Assault Terminator squads. Those Inceptors from the 6th sometimes find a place as Vanguard Veterans.

Deployment and Squad Types

On the battlefield, the 1st Company is deployed as single squads of 5 (or 3 in the case of Bladeguard). They lead the charge, using their experiences and expertise to tackle the deadliest foes.

Assault Terminator and Terminator Squads

The defining feature of the 1st Company is their proficiency in Tactical Dreadnought Armor (Terminator Armor). This massive, ancient plating allows them to walk through tank-caliber fire and teleport directly into the heart of enemy lines. With storm bolter and power fist, Terminators can shoot and punch their way through any enemy. Squads are a mix of Knights and those Agressor marines who saw service in the 6th Company. Their Assault equipped brothers trade shooting for shield and sword or mace, an indomitable wave of walking armour.

Sternguard Veterans

These are the masters of ranged warfare. Sternguard squads utilize specialized ammunition (like Kraken bolts or Vengeance rounds) to pick apart high-priority targets from a distance. They represent the cool-headed, tactical discipline of the Chapter. A keen eye can read the career of a Sternguard from their armour and equipment. Bombastic Knights of the 5th favour heavy bolters and finely engraved armour. The quieter veterans from the 7th tend to stalker bolters and long ranged shots.

Vanguard Veterans and Bladeguard Vetrans

Vanguard Veterans are the aggressive counterpart to the Sternguard. Equipped with Jump Packs along with pistols and swords, Vanguard squads are the Chapter’s premier shock troops, specializing in high-speed, close-quarters decapitation strikes. Mainly drawn from Knights companies, some veteran Inceptors from the Ranger companies can also be found among their ranks.

Rapidly deploying Vanguard Veterans are balanced by their slower and stalwart brothers of the Bladeguard. Clad in ornate power armor and wielding massive Storm Shields alongside master-crafted power swords, these Veterans are peerless duelists who excel at holding the line against impossible odds. They serve as the ultimate front line guardians, combining a knightly martial code with the sheer physical presence required to anchor a battlefront or protect the Chapter’s highest-ranking leaders.

The Role of their Captain: "Regent of the First"

The Captain of the 1st Company is one of the most powerful individuals in the Chapter, often holding the title of First Captain or Master of the Keep. He is typically the heir-apparent to the Chapter Master of the Knights. Leading the 1st Company means managing the Chapter’s most precious resources—both the ancient relic armor and the irreplaceable lives of its most experienced heroes.

"To lead the First is to carry the weight of the Chapter’s history on your shoulders. You do not just command soldiers; you command the legacy of ten thousand years."
