6th Company — The Grey Watch

The Void-Treaders

  • The Chapter’s Boarding Arm, specializing in ship-to-ship actions and orbital interdiction within the Attilan Gap.

  • Fleet-based Wardens who live in the Sea of Stars, patrolling the vital warp-arteries of Imperium Nihilus.

  • Masters of pressurized close-quarters combat, ship interdiction, and anti-piracy operations.

  • The "Grey" in their name refers to the unpainted, scorched ceramite of their armour. The result of frequent atmospheric re-entries and boarding torpedo impacts.

The 6th Company, the Grey Watch, serves as the roving presence of the Chapter throughout the lawless reaches of Imperium Nihilus. While their Knightly brothers hold bastions on solid ground, the Grey Watch ensures the lifeblood of the Attilan Gap, along with its shipping lanes and warp-transit points, remains clear of the xenos filth and heretical renegades that thrive in the galactic dark. Drawing from their Raven Guard heritage, they treat the void not as an empty expanse, but as a hunting ground of shadows to work their trade from.

Life in the 6th is defined by the hum of the reactor and the constant cycle of patrols. They are the Chapter’s primary response to piracy, shadowing merchant convoys and launching lightning-fast boarding actions to seize enemy vessels before they can flee into the warp. While their primary duty is the security of the Gap, their constant presence in the deep void leads them to discover many lost things within ancient wrecks and drifting space-hulks. This has led to a permanent attachment of Technoarcheologist from the Mechanicum to the 6th Company’s fleet, creating a partnership where the Grey Watch secures the vessel and the Priests recover the archeo-tech necessary to keep the Chapter’s gear functional in the resource-starved Nihilus.

Aggressors 30, Inceptors 15, Intercessors 30, Heavy Intercessors 15, Eradicators 10

Deployment and Squad Types

The Grey Watch operates in Breacher Cells tailored for the claustrophobic, lethal environments of starships where cover is scarce and gravity is often a suggestion.

Aggressors and Heavy Intercessors

In the tight, reinforced corridors of an enemy cruiser, the 30 Aggressors act as a shield, first into the fray upon boarding. Armed with flame or boltstorm gauntlets, they clear deck after deck with a wall of fire, their thick armor shrugging off point-blank defensive ordnance. They are supported by Heavy Intercessors who provide the sustained fire needed to hold vital junctions or engine rooms.

Intercessors

The 30 Intercessors of the 6th are equipped to meet their role as Rangers in space. To facilitate movement through narrow ducting and cramped maintenance shafts during a boarding action, they often wear stripped-down Tacticus plate and carry shortened bolt carbines. They are the company’s scouts, moving with ghostly silence to disable gravity generators or life support, sowing terror among the enemy crew before the main force arrives.

Inceptor Void-Jumps

The 15 Inceptors of the Grey Watch are the company's hunters and harpooners. They leap from the bay doors of gunships to fly through open space, using their jump packs to navigate the hazardous debris fields of the Attilan Gap. They specialize in exterior assaults, landing directly on an enemy ship’s outer hull to blow their way into the bridge or secondary command nodes. Many a xenos or heretic captain’s last seconds have been filled with confused terror at seeing a Space Marine looking in at them through the bridge windows from the vacuum outside. Explosive decompression is a rapid and final way to remove a ships command staff.

Eradicators

In ship-boarding, Eradicators are literal breachers. Their melta rifles are used not just for killing heavy targets, but for slagging blast doors and breaching reinforced bulkheads, ensuring that no locked vault or armored citadel can keep the Grey Watch out.

The Role of their Captain: "Master of the Fleet"

The Captain of the 6th Company is the Master of the Fleet. In the lawless expanse of Nihilus, he is a Void-Lord of immense responsibility. He must maintain a constant patrol cycle across the Attilan Gap while balancing the demands of the Adeptus Mechanicus archaeologists who rely on his protection to reach their tech-relics.

In battle, the Master of the Fleet leans upon his decades or centuries of boarding actions within the 6th. He prefers to dismantle an enemy ship from the inside out, preserving the hull for salvage whenever possible. He is often seen leading the first wave of a boarding action, his own warplate modified with ancient tech-relics recovered from the void, delivering a quick death to any captain foolish enough to challenge the Bealach Wardens' sovereignty over the stars.
