9th Company — The Shadow Paths
The Silent Thunder
Heavy-weapon support for Phobos detachments, delivering devastating firepower from the darkness.
Characterized as precise, covert fire teams providing overwatch for stealth operations.
Defined by their identity as patient travellers of the frontier.
Utilize modified heavy weaponry adapted to minimize muzzle flash, recoil, and acoustic signature to maintain concealment.
The 9th Company, the Shadow Paths, provides the heavy kinetic and energy-based solutions required by the Ranger companies. While they maintain the stealth-oriented soul of their Raven Guard lineage, their specific mission necessitates the use of heavier armor and stabilized firing platforms. They are the unseen heavy hand of the Bealach Wardens, providing long-range, low-signature fire support to the 7th and 8th Companies as they operate deep within enemy territory.
Service in the 9th requires a unique blend of a Ranger’s patience and a Knight’s technical mastery of heavy ordnance. These brothers operate in concealed cells, methodically repositioning between volleys to ensure their location remains a mystery to the enemy. By the time an enemy force realizes they are being targeted by heavy fire, the Shadow Paths have already relocated to a new vantage point, leaving only wreckage and confusion in their wake.
The 9th is where a Warden will take their first steps on the Ranger path after graduation from the 10th. Service trains battle brothers in the use of a range of weaponry and armour types. This allows for transfer to the Knights should a new brother be found better with the bolt and blade, rather than with shadow and bolt.
Units
Intercessors 30, Heavy Intercessors 30, Hellblasters 20, Desolation Marines 20
Invader ATV, Storm Speeders, Impulsors
Deployment and Squad Types
The Shadow Paths deploy in "Ghost Batteries"—small fire-teams that prioritize concealment as much as they do accuracy. Every shot is calculated to maximize damage while minimizing the risk of detection.
Heavy Intercessors
The Heavy Intercessors of the 9th provide the stabilized firing platforms mentioned in their doctrine. Clad in Gravis plate for protection against counter-battery fire, they use heavy bolt rifles to pin down enemy forces, allowing the lighter Phobos squads to maneuver or withdraw safely.
Hellblaster and Desolation Squads
The Hellblasters and Desolation Marines serve as the Ranger’s primary tank-hunters and fortification-breakers. Their weapons are specifically modified to suppress muzzle flash and acoustic reports, allowing them to incinerate high-priority targets or rain missiles from a distance without immediately giving away their position.
Vehicles
The 9th Company utilizes Invader ATVs, Storm Speeders and Impulsors to navigate the frontier. These vehicles are used to transport heavy weapons teams into position rapidly and provide a mobile base of fire that can disappear into the terrain as quickly as the infantry they support.
The Role of their Captain: "Master of Relics"
The Captain of the 9th Company is the Master of Relics. In the resource-scarved reality of Imperium Nihilus, his role is vital as he is the guardian of the Chapter’s specialized heavy weaponry and the ancient tech-modifications. He oversees a collection of specialized wargear that is as much a part of the Chapter’s history as its warriors.
On the battlefield, the Master of Relics leads from a Company Heroes command squad. He acts as the strategic spotter and tactical coordinator, directing his Ghost Batteries with a calm, analytical mind.
His teams often with in support of the 6th Company, adding Heavy Intercessor support to boarding operations when an especially large space hulks needs clearing or caches of relics safeguarding until the Mechanicus can extract them.
