BACKGROUND:

The Bealach Wardens were created to guard the Attilian Gap, one of only two stable routes across the Cicatrix Maledictum (Great Rift) into Imperium Nihilus. Their mandate is to secure this crucial passage and protect the Bealach system from the threats that emerge from the warp.

Upon reaching their homeworld, Cuan Dún, the chapter discovered the locals spoke of "giants of shadow and bone" who guarded them against the warp beasts that plagued the planet. These figures were revealed to be loyalist Fallen—Dark Angels marines who had been cast into the warp during the destruction of Caliban and had emerged on this planet centuries earlier. These loyal marines, rejecting the treachery of their kin, had acted as protectors of Cuan Dún, teaching its people to live in silence and safeguarding them from the colossal beasts of the forests.

Out of respect and gratitude, the Bealach Wardens took counsel from these loyalists Fallen, who now serve as secret advisors to the chapter’s leadership. Their influence shaped the Wardens' armour colour scheme and reinforced their ideals of duty, honour, and vigilance.

Cuan Dún, their homeworld, is a planet of harsh beauty. Its towering mountains and vast forests are home to colossal, sound-sensitive predators. The human inhabitants, dwelling in mountaintop fortresses, maintain a high-tech but feudal society shaped by silence and vigilance. The Wardens are both protectors and distant overseers, their rare and decisive interventions reinforcing their legendary status.

The chapter diverges significantly from the Codex Astartes. Instead of adhering to its strict company structure, the Wardens employ mixed-company formations optimised for flexibility. These battle groups blend tactical, assault, and heavy support units, alongside specialist squads like Reivers and Infiltrators, to ensure adaptability on any battlefield.

TACTICS:

The Bealach Wardens specialise in guerrilla warfare, relying on speed, stealth, and surprise. Their Primaris-only force allows for cutting-edge equipment and tactics. Using their homeworld’s terrain as inspiration, they excel in turning natural environments into allies. They frequently deploy mixed detachments, ensuring seamless integration of reconnaissance, assault, and firepower units.

Knights are typically drawn from the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 7th Companies, those specializing in frontline combat, heavy support, and defense. They are masters of conventional warfare, trained in the art of the coordinated assault, the unbreakable shield wall, and the devastating counter-attack.

When large-scale threats emerge—be it a xenos incursion, a Chaos warband surging from the warp, or a full-scale planetary rebellion—it is the Knights who take the field in force. They deploy in organized formations, utilizing combined arms tactics to overwhelm their foes. Their armour is often adorned with ceremonial markings and honours, each a testament to battles fought and victories won. Knights favour weapons of war that emphasize direct confrontation: power swords, chainswords, bolters, and heavy weapons designed to deliver overwhelming firepower. They are the storm that breaks against the enemy, a visible and undeniable force of the Emperor's wrath. While they value silence and discipline, their presence on the battlefield is meant to be felt, a symbol of hope for the Imperium's citizens and a harbinger of doom for its enemies.

Rangers: These operate in smaller, stealth-oriented groups, patrolling the forests of Cuan Dún and the worlds of their system. They are the unseen hand, the shadow in the trees, ensuring that no danger arises without swift and silent elimination. Rangers are primarily drawn from the 3rd, 6th, and 10th Companies, those specializing in reconnaissance, infiltration, and covert operations. The Herald of the Gap: When large-scale conflicts threaten the Attilian Gap, the Wardens send a lone emissary. Clad in ornate green armour adorned with ravens, the Herald delivers a message of warning or direction before disappearing.

 

The Morrígan’s Requiem: After any intervention, the chapter honours the fallen with a solemn ceremony. Ravens are released, symbolising the souls of the dead being carried to rest. The ritual is conducted in silence, broken only by the rustle of wings and the wind.

Armour and Wargrear

The armour and wargear of the Bealach Wardens reflect their dual nature as both Knights and Rangers, with distinct variations in ornamentation and equipment based on rank and battlefield role. All members of the chapter, regardless of role or rank, wear Corvus pattern helmets, a nod to their Raven Guard heritage and a design that further enhances their already imposing appearance.

General Armour Characteristics:

All Bealach Wardens wear power armour painted in their chapter's signature forest green, a colour chosen to honour both their Raven Guard lineage and the influence of the loyalist Fallen they encountered on Cuan Dún. This deep green provides excellent camouflage in forested environments, a tactical advantage on their homeworld and in many of their campaigns. Grey is used as a secondary colour, appearing on helmets and power packs for standard battle brothers, further aiding in blending into rocky or urban terrain.

Ranger Armour and Wargear:

The Whisperers

The Whisperers are a shadowy and highly efficient intelligence network maintained by the Bealach Wardens and overseen by The Master of Shadows. Comprised of human agents, some recruited from the inhabitants of Cuan Dún and others from far-flung regions of the Imperium, the network is tasked with gathering critical intelligence to aid the chapter in preempting threats. These individuals, often indistinguishable from ordinary citizens, infiltrate Imperial and non-Imperial organisations alike, operating in hive cities, rogue trader fleets, and even within the ranks of planetary defence forces.
